Fall Getaway: Visit the Turks and Caicos Islands

by AlexandraResort 23. October 2012 11:46

The Turks and Caicos Islands, a string of 40 different islands and cays located in the West Indies, are an excellent vacation spot at any time of year. These islands have beautiful weather year-round, with temperature ranging from 85 to 90 degrees between June and October and 80 to 84 degrees from November to May, and 350 days of sunshine in an average year. If you’re in an area where fall is chilly and dreary, the Turks and Caicos Islands are just the place to enjoy some beautiful weather and get away from it all for awhile. When you get there, here are a few of the fun activities you’ll be able to enjoy.

  • Snorkel, SCUBA, or SNUBA. The Turks and Caicos Islands are an excellent place for snorkeling and diving. Grand Turk Island in particular is well known among divers for the coral reef wall that runs parallel to the island. West Caicos also has spectacular coral reefs and underwater rock walls. Another fascinating dive opportunity is presented by the shipwrecks, some hundreds of years old, off the shores of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Snorkelers will enjoy the government established snorkeling trails that allow snorkelers to view coral gardens and come into close contact with the area’s amazing specimens of marine life. Want something more challenging than snorkeling, but you’re not quite ready for SCUBA diving? Try SNUBA (surface nexus underwater breathing apparatus) that allows you to explore the ocean at a depth of 20 feet. SNUBA is an exciting new sport that is appropriate for ages 8 and up.
  • Take a glass bottom boat tour. If you can’t or don’t want to swim, you can still explore the undersea beauty in the waters around the Turks and Caicos Islands with a glass bottom boat tour. Several companies in the Turks and Caicos Islands now offer glass bottom boat tours. This is an activity that the entire family can participate in. Non-swimmers will be able to see the coral reefs and marine life through the clear bottom of the boat, and snorkelers can hop into the water and do some exploring of their own. The tour boats provide snorkeling equipment and drinks.
  • Go windsurfing or kiteboarding. Want a thrill or a challenge? Try windsurfing or kiteboarding on Providenciales. Here you can find PASA certified instructors and rental equipment that will allow you to experience flying with the wind or water. The climate and water conditions on Providenciales are perfectly suited to these exciting sports.

Traveling to the Turks and Caicos Islands in the fall may also allow you to find special deals. For instance, the Alexandra Resort has several fall specials: the fourth night free offer and the Caribbean Wine and Food Festival package, but this must be booked before the end of October.  Also, Air Turks & Caicos is offering their Autumn-Matic fare sale: $20 off each way, for a total savings of $40, for any round trip ticket purchased between October 1st and November 30th.  With the great savings and the beautiful weather, fall is a perfect time to visit the Turks and Caicos Islands!

$10M IMPROVEMENTS ANNOUNCED AT PROVO AIRPORT TERMINAL

by AlexandraResort 7. August 2012 10:18

A $10m redevelopment of passenger facilities at Providenciales International Airport was announced by John Smith, CEO, Turks and Caicos Islands Airport Authority.

The planned expansion will nearly double the size of the terminal to better accommodate the 500,000 passengers who pass through the Airport each year. It will increase in size from 51,462 to 92,321 sq ft.

Work is scheduled to begin later this year and be completed in 2014 and will ensure that the TCI’s airport meets the International Association of Travel Agents criteria for Level C Class facilities.

Once completed passengers will be able to enjoy expanded check in counter areas and self check in facilities, additional bathroom facilities, larger retail space for shops and restaurants, and improved medical amenities.

The first phase of works will include the construction of a new traffic circulation system, an extension to the existing west car park, and extension of the departure Lounge.

The second phase will continue with the extension on the international check in area, security check point as well as the arrivals hall.

The third and final phase will include the domestic departures and arrivals area, completion of car park and aesthetics, including water features.

“Providenciales International Airport is absolutely crucial to the Islander and visitor experience,” said Governor Ric Todd. “First impressions are vital, and I am certain that this work will provide the level of experience that our visitors demand.

“People who use the airport facilities know that it can become crowded at peak times – so does the Airport’s Management. That is why they have been planning these crucial works  as part of their overall master plan which also saw the runway expansion completed last year.”

“We are embarking on a journey of fundamental change in the way we conduct business and welcome tourists to the Turks and Caicos Islands,” said John Smith, CEO, Turks and Caicos Airports Authority. “Our terminal expansion project will not only offer better facilities for passengers, but provide us with the room to expand over the next 15 years.”

NEW PRIVATE PLANE TERMINAL WILL HELP TCI TOURISM SOAR

by AlexandraResort 5. December 2011 13:26

A new Fixed Base Operation (FBO) and private aircraft terminal at Providenciales will boost the luxury travel market to the Turks and Caicos Islands when it opens next year.

TCI-based M Aviation Limited, Turks and Caicos Islands Authority (TCIAA) and the TCI Government have agreed on a commitment to develop the new FBO adjacent to Provo’s International Airport, tripling the private airport capacity at the airport. Over one-third of aircraft movements at the airport already comes from private aircraft, despite accounting for only 3% of passenger traffic.

The new state-of-the-art $15m FBO will feature generous parking and hangar space for large and small private aircraft, modern lounge and crew facilities, integrated customs and immigration as well as full servicing of private aircraft.

It will be ready in approx. 12 months time for the 2012/13 tourist season and will support 50 construction jobs during the build period and employ up to 20 personnel once operational. M Aviation has committed to adopt similar local employment principles to the TCIAA Phase 1 project which saw a minimum of 70% local employment.

M Aviation has tasked GENIVAR, who recently managed the first stage of the expansion of Providenciales Airport, with designing their new facility. The land will be leased from the TCIG and the TCIAA based on the standard Turks & Caicos Islands Government’s lease principles for a period of 99 years taking inflation into account.

M Aviation is a Turks and Caicos based company owned and operated by investors who have already made significant tourism related investments developing a leading luxury resort in Turks and Caicos.

Governor Ric Todd added: “Such a significant investment commitment by a local company into our infrastructure shows that business confidence is building across the Turks and Caicos. The new facility will allow our islands to keep pace with other Caribbean destinations and play a key role in supporting our exclusive resorts.”

John Smith, Chief Executive of the TCIAA, commented that: “The private aviation market is showing tremendous growth as more and more affluent travelers wish to take advantage of the privacy, flexibility and convenience of traveling on a private plane. A second FBO facility in Turks & Caicos will position us well as a luxury destination for the future."

The new FBO facility is an integral part of the overall airport expansion strategy. Phase One saw the extension of the runway to 9,200 feet and 36,000 sq m additional apron to accommodate B777-300ER and B747-400 aircraft on direct long haul flights, especially from Europe. This phase was completed ahead on schedule and within the fixed price $36m budget.

TCIAA is currently undertaking minor refurbishment work on the existing terminal, leading into the development work required to facilitate Phase 2, the terminal and car park project. Phase 2 is estimated at around a $30-$40m investment with a construction time frame of two years.
